Johnathan Dwyer Arrested: Arizona Cardinals Running Back Charged With Domestic Violence

Johnathan Dwyer has been arrested, with the Arizona Cardinals running back facing charges of domestic violence.

Dwyer was arrested Wednesday in connection with an incident that reportedly happened between Dwyer and his wife “a while ago,” reports indicated.

CBS News is reporting that Johnathan Dwyer has been charged with aggravated assault and preventing someone from calling 911.

The arrest comes at a difficult time for the NFL. The league had already been facing criticism over the light two-game suspension of Baltmore Ravens running back Ray Rice when video emerged last week of the incident itself, showing Rice striking is fiancee Janay Palmer and knocking her out.

Rice was suspended indefinitely, but the NFL faced an even more difficult situation when star Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was arrested and accused of child abuse. Peterson was de-activated for Sunday’s game but re-instated on Monday. When new allegations of child abuse emerged — one that had been investigated by police but led to no charges — the team and the league faced criticism for not acting on Peterson sooner.

Greg Hardy was also de-activated this Sunday in connection to a domestic violence conviction this summer.

The incidents have led to widespread criticism for the league, with sponsors including Anheuser-Busch speaking out. Some believe that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell could now be on the hotseat.

The arrest could be trouble for the Cardinals. Johnathan Dwyer is No. 2 on the team’s depth chart and has 16 carries through the first two games of the season.
