Pharrell Williams Rapper, Record Producer, Fashion Designer… Feminist ?

Perhaps you know Pharrell Williams as the sharp, cool, overtly sexualized star/rapper, but what you may not know is that Pharrell is also sensitive to the plight of the fairer sex. On Saturday night, Pharrell was performing in the Stockholm Globe Arena and invited the leader of Sweden’s Feminist Initiative party, Gundrun Schyman, on stage to the surprise of his fans.

The concert took place a day before the Swedish Parliamentary Elections. Although Schyman’s party only garnered 3.1 percent of the vote, the leader would not have any regrets going on stage with the hit rapper.

“I hear you guys might have a feminist party tomorrow”, Pharrell shouted out to the Swedish crowd before performing his hit song “Happy” with the Feminist Initiative party leader by his side.

Pharrell again yelled to the crowd, “Somehow I feel that with you in position we won’t have to worry so much about terrorism any more. You guys make life not take life.”

The 66-year-old politician attracted some criticism in Sweden for the decision, and she defended herself. Schyman said, “It is not as if we support the songs he does. It was instead he who wanted to support us, and that I thought was very nice.”

Pharrell Williams has always received criticism for his sexually gratifying lyrics towards women. His collaboration with Robin Thicke and T.I., the worldwide hit single “Blurred Lines,” was banned in British universities for its misogynist lyrics and alleged glorification of date rape. YouTube also decided to ban the video because it contained nudity.

Last week, The Inquisitr reported that Pharrell’s “Happy” became the most downloaded song in UK chart history, overtaking his much darker “Blurred Lines.”

In honor of Pharrell’s new feminist position, we take a look at some of his best lyrics aimed towards the fairer sex.
