Spanish Gravedigger Poses With A Mummified Body He Exhumed, Is Swiftly Suspended

Gravediggers usually have the most solemn work. They toil to ensure the deceased are buried with full respects. However, a Spanish gravedigger recently posed with an exhumed body and the photo went viral on the internet. Taking a serious note of the same, Spanish authorities have suspended the man.

A Spanish cemetery worker reportedly dug up the body of a man who’d died 23 years ago. He did so on the request of the family of the deceased. They wished that his just deceased wife could join him and the two would be buried together, alongside each other. Their joint tombs would be added to the family tomb.

However, when the man was exhumed, the gravedigger was in for a surprise. The body of the man had become mummified. The remains were somehow mostly preserved along with the garb the man was buried in. Though significantly browned by age, the shirt and trousers of the man still clung onto the body as if the corpse was recently dressed. They weren’t disintegrated as is expected, neither were they in tatters.

But the gravedigger was in a dilemma. There was space for only one body to fit inside the tomb and he didn’t want to break the near-perfectly preserved body so another corpse could fit in the same space. So the gravedigger did, what any normal person would do. He called up the living members of the deceased man’s family.

The man’s nephew and niece arrived. Looking at the mummified remains of the uncle, the niece thought that it would be a great photo opportunity. Hence, she took a photograph of her dead relative standing next to the digger and her living relation.

Instead of respecting the dead man’s, as well as the family’s privacy, the niece sent the photo to another family member via messaging service WhatsApp. Needless to say, the photo quickly spread and was posted on several different social media sites, reported The Local.

The town hall of Guardamar del Segura, near Alicante, eventually found out about the sick stunt and immediately launched an investigation into its employee. Officials swiftly suspended the gravedigger, and the case has been referred to the Civil Guard police force.

Though Felipe Aldeguer, an elected official, said that the incident was “unpleasant, miserable and untimely,” he did have a soft corner for the poor gravedigger who had apparently only honored the request of the niece, reported The Mirror. Felipe said that though the incident was unfortunate, the digger “had not acted in bad faith.”
