Will Ferrell Will Play Video Games With You For Charity

Comedian and actor Will Ferrell, known for appearing in such films as Anchorman, is posing a challenge to all gamers in order to raise money for his chosen charities.

Ferrell teamed up with Twitch, a video platform and gaming community, for an Indiegogo campaign called “Will Ferrell’s SuperMegaBlastMax Gamer Challenge” to raise $375,000 for Cancer for College and Donate Games. Each person who donates to the campaign will have a chance to win the grand prize, which is an all-expenses paid trip for two to San Francisco in October to play a game with Ferrell for two hours, IGN reports. The event will also be streamed live on Twitch.

Donating $10 gives gamers a chance to win the grand prize, but donating more money also gives participants other goodies. For a donation of $50, participants will get the limited edition Will Ferrell gamer’s sunscreen. For $75, participants get a t-shirt for gamers. For $150, participants will be given a game hoodie. $500 gets one of 20 limited edition cowbells signed by Ferrell. Lastly, those who donate $250 get to own one of 20 limited edition XBOX 360 controllers signed by Ferrell.

For those who are feeling more generous, $1,500 gets a video message from Will Ferrell and $5,000 will fund a college scholarship for a cancer survivor.

Both of Will Ferrell’s chosen charities deal with cancer. Cancer for College gives college scholarships to cancer survivors, while Donate Games makes use of video games to help children who have cancer. Donate Games was founded by Jim Carol, who has a son that was diagnosed with leukemia at age 11. Carol said that video games helped his son through the long stays in the hospital.

Carol also said that they will be working with Twitch to have these once a month. “Every month we’ll have a celebrity,” he said.

In the video for the campaign, Ferrell urged all gamers to join the campaign.

“I know the popular perception of gamers is that we are all extremely motivated, highly philanthropic, and impossibly good looking. Let’s not alter people’s perception on this. Donate today and we could be hanging out in October. Or as I like to call it, Rocktober.”

The campaign is open to all U.S. residents who are 13 and older, and contributions will be accepted until October 12 at 11:59 p.m. PT. As of writing, Will Ferrell’s SuperMegaBlastMax Game Challenge has already raised $42,420 with 30 days left to reach the goal of $375,000.
