Mentally Disturbed Man Walks Into Kindergarten Class

A mentally disturbed man walked into a kindergarten class Friday morning at a Jersey City school. The man is now in police custody.

The Jersey Journal reports that the stranger casually entered the kindergarten trailer outside Fred W. Martin School. Everyone was rushed to the main building. School district officials say no one was harmed in the incident.

The man isn’t charged with anything, but law enforcement admitted him to a local hospital for evaluation. No other details about the incident were released by police.

At first police were informed that the strange man entered the kindergarten naked, but district spokeswoman, Maryann Dickar, says the man had clothes on.

Police were called about the alarming situation around 11:20 a.m., where they found the man in a bathroom and took him into custody then. At that point, the children and staff went to he main school building and didn’t return to the trailer for the rest of the day.

Dickar hasn’t elaborated on the incident. Jersey City school board member Marilyn Roman says she’s worried about the easy access outsiders have to the trailer.

“I don’t know if the teacher had locked the door or maybe the locks don’t work properly,” says Roman. “We need to make sure the trailers are safe for the students.”

Roman notes that this event is pushing the school district to double-check doors at other school yards and replace, if any, those that are broken or need repairing.

Roman explains that safety is a paramount.

“We have to make them safe, we have no other recourse because we don’t have the room in the school buildings. This (incident) shows we may have to put extra locks on doors… But we can’t afford to just close them up.”

Bob McHugh, a spokesman for the Jersey City Police Department, adds that the mentally disturbed man wasn’t injured in the incident. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health for the evaluation and observation, according to Mark Rabson, a spokesman for the hospital. Rabson hasn’t provided details about the man’s evaluation.

Eyewitness News 7 reports that parents were notified of the incident.

Luckily, none of the kindergarten students or staff were hurt or threatened when the man unexpectedly entered the trailer. Schools are getting more secure overall with so much gun violence and other unsettling factors that revolve around children attending school.
