‘Game Of Thrones’ Book Release Announced, But Not The One You’re Waiting For

Game of Thrones fans, prepare for tepid excitement. George R. R. Martin, creator of the Song of Ice and Fire series that inspired the HBO hit show Game of Thrones, announced the release date for his latest book about Westeros. Unfortunately, it won’t be the much anticipated next novel, The Winds of Winter.

The next release, called The World of Ice and Fire, is an illustrated history of the world in which Game of Thrones takes place. The new book will span from the beginning of Westeros to the death of the Mad King, which happens only a few decades before Season 1 of Game of Thrones and the first book in the Song of Ice and Fire series.

In promotion of the book. Martin will speak at the 92nd Street Y in New York city on October 26, the same day The World of Ice and Fire will be released. Fans not in New York City or unable to pay $100 to see the Game of Thrones author in person can watch the free live stream at Livecast.

It’s been a roller coaster of a summer for fans of Game of Thrones. Filming resumed around the world recently in preparation for Season 5. The cast took a break to attend this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, only for the show to fail to nab a single award (though Game of Thrones did win four Creative Arts Emmy Awards).

There was also the official announcement that George R. R. Martin, who has written an episode of the series since the first season, will not write an episode in Season 5 so that he can focus on the highly anticipated next installment of the Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter.

There was more bad news this week: Actor Kristian Nairn broke the collective hearts of Game of Thrones fans when he announced in an interview that his character Hodor will not appear in Season 5. This has widely lead to the assumption that Isaac Hempstead-Wright’s character, Bran Stark, would also be missing from Season 5. According to Screen Rant, Hempstead-Wright may have given fans a ray of hope. When interviewed during promotions for his next film, Boxtrolls, Hempstead-Wright said that his only plans are for “the next season of ‘Game of Thrones.'”

Could that mean Bran and Hodor are about to be separated? Is Hempstead-Wright merely trying to help his bosses keep things under wraps? Fans will probably find out soon through spoilers, but the only sure way is to watch Game of Thrones when Season 5 starts in April 2015.
