Watch Ed Sheeran Cover Snow Patrol’s ‘Chasing Cars’

Ed Sheeran has been collaborating with other musicians a lot lately, from working with Taylor Swift and Jessie Ware to writing music with David Guetta to be sold to other artists. Now it seems Ed Sheeran has moved beyond working on original materials to be performed with or by other musicians and into the realm of performing songs that he didn’t write himself.

In an exclusive performance for MTV, Ed Sheeran recently covered Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” in a sincere live performance in front of a small audience. You can see Ed’s incredible rendition of “Chasing Cars” in the video above.

While the original song may seem to be along the same vein as the kind of sentimental music Ed Sheeran already produces, Sheeran does manage to take it in his own direction. Like all good covers, this version takes the original and twists it into something unique.

Ed utilizes looping pedals a bit in this cover to add backing vocals. But most of the track is led by Sheeran’s tender voice and a carefully strummed guitar. For a singer from the U.K., Ed’s Snow Patrol cover has a surprisingly country sound two it, particularly in the more aggressive acoustic guitar hits.

Typically, Ed Sheeran does do stripped down versions of other people’s songs. To name a few, Ed has covered “She Looks So Perfect” by 5 Seconds of Summer, a band recently in the news for singer Calum Hood’s antics and opinions. But Ed Sheeran has also taken songs totally outside his style and made them his own, such as Beyoncé’s “Drunk In Love.”

While this MTV performance was intimate and exclusive, Ed Sheeran has actually performed“Chasing Cars” before, according to Rolling Stone. In fact, Ed performed the song in front of 20,000 people at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and was joined by the actual Snow Patrol singer, Gary Lightbody.

The original song was written by the band Snow Patrol and released in 2006. It was a widely successful hit, getting lots of airtime on pop radio stations. Ed Sheeran has been receiving the same kind of success with his original material these days. His most recent album x made it to the top spot on the Billboard U.K. charts. Ed Sheeran was also recently granted the privilege of performing at the Australian Football League’s Grand Final game with Tom Jones and Olivia Newton-John. You can read more about that here.
