Dwayne Wade Goes Groomzilla As He Weds Gabrielle Union

Dwayne Wade and Garbrielle Union broke hearts all over the country on Saturday.

While the wedding was no surprise to anyone — the proposal and impending nuptials were well covered in celebrity news circles — what was a surprise was the active hand which Wade took in planning the wedding. In a reversal of traditional roles, Wade reportedly took over the wedding arrangements when his bride, 41-year-old actress and Being Mary Jane star Gabrielle Union, tried to “turn it into a frat party with K-cups and beer pong.” The New York Times noted that Wade is known for his fashion sense compared to other NBA players, making him more adept at wedding planning than the average groom.

And well-planned is the perfect way to describe the nuptials. As previously reported by The Inquisitr, Wade and Union set strict rules for their guests, insisting that cell phones and cameras be left behind. Attendees were also required to sign a confidentiality agreement. Perhaps in lieu of a wedding gift?

Contracts and pat downs notwithstanding, the event was reportedly beautiful. For the event, Wade and Union chose Chateau Artisan, a castle surrounded by a moat, in Miami, Florida. Union’s wedding gown was custom designed by Dennis Basson. Wade’s suits were custom designed by DSquared2, a design duo who also designed Michael Bublé’s wedding suit. Yes, suits. Wade had no fewer than three costume changes, more than Union. The couple’s colors were black and white, and guest dress code was reportedly black tie.

The event was held outdoors, despite it being hurricane season in Florida. The wedding was an intimate affair, with only 200 guests in attendance, including Carmelo Anthony, comedian Kevin Hart, and John legend, who also performed. It was not, however, thrifty. The estimated price tag for the elegant wedding rang in at $5 million. For that, the couple had their fairytale wedding and, according to People Magazine, a 1930 sjuke joint themed reception where Union’s own Vanilla Puddin’ Chardonnay was served to guests.

Wade and Union certainly earned their happy ending. As reported by Yahoo! Celebrity, the road to the altar hasn’t exactly been paved with chocolate kisses for the couple. This was the second marriage for both Union and Wade. In the four years that the couple has been together, they weathered a bitter divorce as Wade split from his high school sweetheart Siohvaughn Funches shortly after she gave birth to their second son. Other hurdles included STD accusations, rumors of infidelity while Wade was still married to Funches, accusations of emotional abuse on Wade’s children committed by Union, a custody battle, a break up, and revelations of a love child conceived during said break up.

Wade and Union had been dating since 2007. They became engaged in December of 2013.
