Marvel May Need to Reconsider Female Role as Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Lucy’ Hits $200M

Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy hit $200 million globally only after one month at the box office. With 22 markets overseas still left to open for viewing, Lucy will be “the next big thing.” But what will be the effect of Lucy’s popularity on the future?

The movie operated on a $40 million budget and starred Scarlett Johansson as the protagonist Lucy. According to another report from The Inquisitr, Johansson commented, “Even making it everyday, sort of, you know, brought on its own unique challenges because the character was losing the sense of her own humanity as she’s gaining all of these superhuman abilities. So there was kind of no guidelines for that. I never knew what I was going to be stepping into each day. The whole [‘Lucy’] shoot had a level of surrealism to it, I suppose.”

Johansson’s strong female role in Lucy could attract Marvel’s attention, hopefully resulting in a similar release with a strong female role from Marvel. Johansson plays Black Widow in many of Marvel’s other films, so there is a chance that Marvel will release a movie solely dedicated to Johansson.

Public opinion of a Black Widow movie has been overwhelmingly strong.

“I think I’d like to do a big movie with a strong female lead, whether or not she would be a superhero. I’m more interested in characters like Scarlett Johansson in ‘Lucy.’ I’m less interested in people with superpowers because I can’t identify with them. Very rarely do they get killed off, and when they do get killed off, chances are they’re going to be back… somehow. Yes, I’d love to do a big splashy movie with a great female lead, but it has to be someone I can believe in,” said Game of Thrones director Niel Marshall in an interview. “I would love to do a Black Widow movie. That’s perfect, I would love to do that. That character is really interesting, she doesn’t have any superpowers, she just has extraordinary skills, and the world that she comes from, being this ex-K.G.B. assassin, I find that really fascinating, yeah.”

As of now, Marvel has not commented on a Black Widow movie. But they also can’t ignore the popularity surrounding Scarlett Johansson’s strong female role in Lucy. Time will tell if Marvel takes advantage of the popular public opinion to release a Black Widow movie.
