Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ Movie Is Full Speed Ahead! Casting, Storyline, Release Date Details

Marvel’s standalone film for Doctor Strange is rapidly gaining steam. Doctor Strange already has a script by Jon Spaihts that everyone seems extremely happy with, especially the director attached to the film, Scott Derrickson, according to KPopStarz:

“Obviously it’s been announced there’s a writer on Doctor Strange but in that situation it’s maybe my favorite screenwriter in town. I’d read four of his scripts before ever meeting him. I think that the opportunity to work with great talent and people who can supersede my abilities in various areas is extremely exciting to me. Like, Jon Spaihts is a genius.”

Marvel Studio’s president, Kevin Feige, recently spoke about Doctor Strange hitting a new nerve in the Marvel Universe, according to Total Film.

“I believe it’s very, very important for us to explore every nook and cranny of the comic-book universe. We’ve done the street-level heroes, and we’ve done the billionaire superheroes. We’ve done the cosmic side with Thor and Avengers and most obviously with Guardians of the Galaxy, but there’s a whole other side of the Marvel comics, which is the supernatural side – the inter-dimensional side of the Marvel universe.”

Feige went on to say that he thought Doctor Strange was the initial movie that would introduce audiences to that supernatural side of the Marvel universe.

The Marvel Studio president also gave us an overview of the Doctor Strange story.

“It’s an amazing character study… a journey of a man who’s gone from this very arrogant surgeon to somebody who is quite zen and literally keeps all of reality together on a daily basis.”

Do those comments actually beat back the rumors that Doctor Strange would not be an origin story?

Feige went on to say that the casting for Doctor Strange will begin in the next month (September) and that the film will be released on July 8th, 2016.

There’s been all manner of casting rumors regarding Doctor Strange and its lead role of Strange himself. The latest include Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, having some hush-hush talks with Marvel. Other rumored actors in talks for the role include Jared Leto, Kyle MacLachlan, Joaquin Phoenix, and even Johnny Depp.

The gambling pools as to who will be tapped to play Doctor Strange are in full swing. Radcliffe seems a bit young, and so does Leto, but Jared might have the chops to pull it off. Johnny Depp might be great, and he’s already close to Disney via the Pirates of the Caribbean films. The Kyle MacLachlan rumors started when the Twin Peaks star was tapped to play a character called “the Doctor” on the second season of Agents of Shield. Joaquin Phoenix would be an interesting choice to play Doctor Strange as well.

What do you think? What actor would you bet is going to play Doctor Strange?
