Qwikster Twitter Account Not Owned By Netflix, Tweets About Pot

In an attempt to earn back customer loyalty and separate their business models Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced over the weekend that the company’s DVD service would be separated into a new company called Qwikster. Reed just forgot one important aspect of his company’s attempt to change their image, ensuring they could control the social media accounts for that brand.

Visitors to the Twitter account @Qwikster are greeted by a photo of Sesame Street character Elmo holding onto a joint in his hand, while the tweets from the account are all about boredom and smoking marijuana, definitely not about renting DVDs for home delivery.

One tweet on the account reads:

“Bored as shyt wanna blaze but at the same time I don’t.”

While another tweet probably won’t help Netflix grab the female demographic with a tweet that says:

“Damn so manny cute ass gurl.”

As the name was already claimed it could be an uphill battle for the company to grab the account for business use, now would be a good time for Reed Hastings to open up his checkbook and right a bit fat check to some random pot smoking Twitter user if he’s really serious about protecting his company’s brand.

In the meantime you can hear all about the exploits of @Qwister owner Jason Castillo by heading over to his Twitter account, just don’t expect him to send you DVDs in the mail.

Do you think it’s important for company’s to secure social media accounts before announcing the launch of a new product or brand?
