Caroline Wozniacki On Ex, Rory McIlroy: ‘I Could Never Hate Him’

For tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, her break up with her very famous fiance, golfer sensation Rory McIlroy was a shock and a very public one. As if things weren’t hard enough, the Danish star had to bear it all in front of the world and as she tried to stay on track with her career, things were difficult.

Despite the break up of Wozilroy — as fans had dubbed the power couple — in such an unexpected way (he reportedly told her over the phone), Wozniacki is hoping that her attachment to the red-hot golfer won’t be how people know her. In a recent interview with the New York Times, the 24-year-old opened up about Rory McIlroy.

“I don’t want to have my name stuck with him forever. I’m my own person. I have my own career.” the Dane said.

Rory McIlroy broke up wit his fiance, Caroline Wozniacki days after sending hundreds of wedding invitations to guests, which in it of itself was humiliating, considering we are talking about two well-known public figures. The news made waves in the sports world and Wozniacki, who was forced to put on a brave face immediately after, at the French Open, said:

“When it comes out of the blue, that’s like a shock. It’s like someone dies right in front of you…You start thinking what was wrong? What went wrong?”

But Caroline Wozniacki is focusing on her tennis, after her much publicized break up from Rory McIlroy. She has been working hard at gaining back that top spot she once held and moving from No. 14 in the world, to No. 11, in a few short months.

Following an early exit for both, from Roland Garros, Caroline and pal Serena Williams — who has been very supportive — went out and enjoyed themselves in the City of Lights. Serena shared that her friend never trashed her ex, even in her darkest moments:

“She said, ‘I could never hate him. He’s been a big part of my life and even if I wanted to, I couldn’t hate him,’ ” Williams told the NYT. “I was really influenced by that.”

At the time, The Inquisitr reported that McIlroy had a shocking three-minute phone call with Wozniacki, in which he told her of his decision to end the relationship because the was not ready to get married.

“…The last time he called, less than a day after telling her how much he loved her, it was a three-minute conversation she thought was a joke.”

Caroline Wozniacki told the NYT she hasn’t spoken to McIlroy since the shocking split in May, but is more than ready to move on with someone that will accept her as she is, but for now she is enjoying her new status as a single woman:

“I don’t believe in holding onto someone who doesn’t want to be with you. I definitely want someone who just wants you for who you are. I’m very upfront, I’m very honest and I’m very straightforward and I think some people get intimidated by that. I’m not saying Rory did… (pause) In general, a lot of people do, and if I’m in a relationship that’s strong, I’m the person I am and that’s exactly what you get.”

“It’s important in relationships to talk. If there’s a problem, you talk about it. That’s normal. Obviously, I didn’t have that chance. At the end of the day, I couldn’t have done anything different. I couldn’t have done anything more. I gave everything I had. And if that’s not enough, that’s fine. I’ll find someone who will.”
