Second Amendment: Georgia Dad Sues Over Right To Take Gun To School
A Georgia dad is suing his daughter’s school over his Second Amendment right to take a gun onto campus. Beulah Elementary School parent Hugh Myers was told that he would be placed under arrest if he took a gun on school grounds other than when picking up or dropping of his daughter. A new Georgia gun law which took effect last month permits registered gun owners to carry a gun at schools.
Hugh Meyers’ attorney, John Monroe, maintains that the Douglasville dad has every right to take his legal gun to Beulah Elementary School. The Second Amendment lawsuit against the school states that the Georgia man often goes onto school ground to attend his daughter’s educational activities. He wants to exercise his right to carry a gun to the elementary school in case of a confrontation, as state law now allows. The attorney said that he believes the Hugh Myers gun lawsuit is the first of its type in Georgia, but due to the new gun law, he feels it may not be the last.
The Beulah Elementary School principal declined to comment on the gun lawsuit filed against the school, noting the issue is now an ongoing legal matter. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, a Republican, signed the gun bill into law amid controversy. Gun rights activists gathered with supportive state lawmakers for the signing and applauded the law as a worthy self-defense and school safety measure.
The new Georgia gun law permits individuals with a license to carry a firearm to take a gun into some government buildings which do not have specific security guidelines, such as metal detectors and guards. Guns are now allowed inside bars without restriction by individuals who are not consuming alcohol.
The new statute also allows religious leaders to determine whether or not a person with a gun carry license to take a weapon into a place of worship. School districts are also free to permit staffers to carry a gun on campus under outlined conditions.
The Safe Carry Protection Act has been dubbed the “guns everywhere” law by critics. Second Amendment advocates are quick to note that criminals already take guns everywhere, and the posting of a “Gun Free Zone” signs simply makes those inside such a facility nothing more than defenseless targets. The law applies to Georgia citizens who are licensed to carry and visitors from 28 others states which have firearms reciprocity with the state.
