Confirmed: PlayStation Vita will be region-free

It’s been speculated, and even strongly hinted at a few times, that the PlayStation Vita would be region-free. That was just speculation, though; now we know for sure.

Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, confirmed that the PlayStation Vita will be region-free over on Twitter earlier today. A fan asked if it was confirmed that the Vita will be region-free, to which Yoshida replied, “Yes, it is.”

For those that do a lot of importing of foreign titles, this is great news. It’s even greater news for those who want to get their hands on the Vita early as, since it’s region-free, those with the extra cash to pay the premium for importing one when it launches first in Japan on December 17 will be able to do so.

The PlayStation Vita still doesn’t have confirmed dates outside of Japan, so that’s your only option if you wanted to get the handheld in time for Christmas and what have you. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until some point in the first quarter of 2012.
