Gumby Robber, Accomplice Surrender to Police

Californians can rest easy as the giant green Gumby Robber, a costumed crook who allegedly attempted to rob a 7-Eleven store in San Diego, has turned himself in.

Jacob Kiss, 19, who dressed as the famous claymation character during the stunt, surrendered voluntarily this Tuesday along with his alleged get-away driver Jason Giramma (also 19), police said in a statement to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The bizarre robbery attempt occurred after midnight September 5 at a 7-Eleven store near the Rancho Penasquitos community in Northern San Diego, Ca.

The incident, captured by store surveillance cameras, showed a would-be robber, dressed as Gumby, walk into the store, claiming to have a gun and demanding a pack of cigarettes and cash from a store clerk – who apparently thought the whole ordeal was just a joke.

The suspect, claiming to have a gun, attempts to pull it out from his costume but instead drops 27 cents on the floor and leaves the convenience store empty-handed.

The store clerk didn’t report the crime to police until his boss saw the footage hours later.

Surveillance video from the store was widely broadcast in news reports and a $1,000 reward was offered through Crime Stoppers following the odd robbery attempt.

Investigators questioned Kiss and Giramma, took down their statements and confiscated the full-body Gumby costume before releasing the pair.

Police said the case had been sent to the District Attorney’s Office to determine what, if any, charges will be filed against the pair.
