Watch This Guy (Me) Scream Like A Girl Doing ALS Ice Bucket Challenge [VIDEO]

On Friday I was hoping that someone would issue me the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. On Saturday night it happened, and on Sunday afternoon… this:

The cause is amazing, the experience is refreshing. Here’s how it works:

The challenge is issued to either dump a bucket of ice water on your head or donate $100 to the ALS Association. It’s nice to have an option, and theoretically, the cause benefits regardless of how your respond.

The challenge has certainly managed to raise awareness for the cause, as dozens of celebrities have gotten on board. Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Conan O’Brien, Bill Gates — even the casts of morning network television are joining in. On Friday, both ABC’s Good Morning America and NBC’s The Today Show had cold, wet episodes. On Monday morning, 97.5 NOW FM radio listeners across mid-Michigan will hear about how I was one of three local DJs nominated by another local radio DJ, and how I nominated three other local radio DJs. That’s (hopefully) at least seven different mid-Michigan radio audiences being exposed.

But Parade Magazine reports that the ALS Association and its 38 chapters have received $4 million in donations in the past two weeks. That, versus just over $1 million during the same period last year. So, maybe there are a few more people than President Barack Obama that don’t want to dump a bucket of ice water on their head, but that is A-OK.

Barbara Newhouse, President and CEO of the ALS Association, is quoted in a release on the organization’s website, saying “We have never seen anything like this in the history of the disease. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the level of compassion, generosity and sense of humor that people are exhibiting as they take part in this impactful viral initiative.”

She goes on to say “While the monetary donations are absolutely incredible, the visibility that this disease is getting as a result of the challenge is truly invaluable. People who have never before heard of ALS are now engaged in the fight to find treatments and a cure.” More than 70,000 new donors have contributed to the association since the beginning of the month.

ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, named after the former New York Yankees first baseman, involves the loss of control of voluntarily muscle movement. Eventually, it inhibits the ability to eat, speak, walk and, eventually, breathe.

Lou Gehrig was forced to retire at 36 years old after becoming stricken with the disease. He died two years later.
