Bats Are Not As Scary As You Think, In Fact, These Orphan Baby Bats Will Melt Your Heart

Are you afraid of bats? If you are, you’re no different than most people. Human beings, for whatever reason, have long considered the bat one of nature’s most terrifying creatures. Look at how they’re portrayed in fiction. Dracula turns into a bat. When Bruce Wayne wanted a disguise that would strike fear into the hearts of criminals, he decided to dress up as a bat and become Batman.

Maybe it’s their strange appearance, like oversize mice with wings and jet-black eyes, and macabre habit of sleeping while hanging upside down. Maybe it’s their reputation for carrying horrifying diseases like rabies and Ebola.

But forget all that. With this video, we are going to make you love bats. Cute, bottle-feeding, baby bats.

This video comes to us from Australia, where the Australian Bat Clinic and Wildlife Center dedicates its whole mission to supporting and saving orphaned bats, and other exotic animals, in hopes of creating “an environment that educates and inspires the general public to accept Bats and other native fauna as part of our lives.”

Here’s how the Bat Clinic describes this video, and the “bat-mother” you’ll see here, caring for nine baby bats at the same time:

“Trish Wimberley looks after hundreds of orphaned baby bats and rears them until they can be released into the wild. It’s a tireless, never ending job which keeps her awake all hours (she apparently went 3 nights without sleeping once). A typical day may include feeding (the food is about $1000 a week), health checks, doing their laundry (the dryer and washing machine electricity bill costs up to $8000 every 3 or 4 months!), bat transportation for release — everything they need in order to survive.”

By the way, $1,000 in Australian money is worth about $930 American, so wherever you live, taking care of bats is expensive. We think that once you watch this baby bats video, you’ll agree they’re worth every cent.
