‘Game Of Thrones’ Author George R.R. Martin Hates Selfies: “If I Could Burn Out Every Camera Phone, I’d do it”

What do the main characters in Game Of Thrones have in common with camera phones? Author George R.R. Martin wants them all dead. “Oh, and ‘selfies’! If I could clap my hands and burn out every camera phone in the world, I swear I’d do it,” Martin said in an interview with the Guardian when discussing his loss of privacy since Game Of Thrones hit it big on HBO.

In the years following, the Game Of Thrones books (Officially named A Song Of Ice And Fire series in the books) have gone from very successful to an over-the-mountain mainstream success, catapulting author George R.R. Martin from cult fantasy icon to household name:

I’m constantly forgetting that my life has been transformed… I’d had 20 years of fantasy and science fiction books that had done well, but not like this. And there’s part of me that makes the unconscious assumption that I’m still that person and can live that kind of life. And then I’m reminded that I can’t because Game of Thrones has become such a phenomenon and I’ve become a celebrity. There are nice things about it and not so nice.

The loss of privacy is prime among those not-so-nice things, as mentioned at the top of the article. It’s not the first time the Game Of Thrones author has had beef with fans and their intrusion into his personal life. If you’ll recall here at The Inquisitr we wrote an article wherein Martin said “F**k you” to fans concerned about his health–or rather fans concerned that Martin would not finish the Game Of Thrones books before he died.

Martin goes on to address the pressure he feels from both HBO and fans on finishing the Game Of Thrones books:

I have to be aware that the books are what I’ll finally be judged on. If the novels are still being read in 50 years, no one is ever going to say: “What’s great about that sixth book is that he met his deadline!” It will be about how the whole thing stands up.

In a further clash with fans’ wishes, Martin recently told Sky News that the new book in the series will be released “when it’s ready” (via CBSNews).
