Time is quickly running out for drivers to get that all-important win that would virtually secure a spot in the Chase for the Cup. There are only three more races after today’s NASCAR Pure Michigan 400 before the Chase starts. Look for drivers who haven’t made it to Victory Lane yet in 2014 to ramp up their efforts. This could lead to particularly exciting racing today, given Michigan International Speedway’s wide oval track. Drivers often race four and five abreast on the track.

Jeff Gordon starts the NASCAR Pure Michigan 400 at the pole position, after falling to second behind Dale Earnhardt Jr. (who is starting in the 25th position) in the NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings. Not that it matters. Gordon and Junior are both already in the Chase due to wins. Of the rest of the top five — Joey Logano, Carl Edwards, Brian Vickers, and Brad Keselowski — only Brian Vickers is still chasing his first win of the season. Vickers, starting fourth, is 18th in the points standings with nine other no-win drivers ahead of him in point. Look for him to go all-out to get that all-important victory in today’s race.

Drivers six through 10 feature only one driver — Kevin Harvick, starting sixth — who have won NASCAR Sprint Cup races this season (Harvick has won three). Paul Menard is starting in seventh, Austin Dillon in eighth, Jamie McMurray in ninth and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in 10th. Other notable drivers include Danica Patrick, who is also chasing her first checkered flag, starting in 14th, and Jeff Burton, filling in for Tony Stewart, who is sitting this race out after the sprint car race incident that left Kevin Ward Jr. dead. Burton starts today’s race in the 27th position.

Today’s race is the first NASCAR Sprint Cup race to feature new rules forbidding drivers to exit cars after crashes and accidents unless the car is burning. The new rule is designed to minimize on-track altercations between drivers.
