Camera System Detects Lies By Studying Faces

British scientists working with the the countries border agency have built a new type of camera that is capable of detecting lies on a human face.

The camera combines a mixture of video, thermal imaging and specially created algorithms to detect changes in a persons face which signal lies. Some of the camera’s capabilities can be read by the trained eye, for example physical changes in a persons face following emotions such as eye movement, bitten lips and dilated pupils.

The contraption then goes further by detecting tiny changes we can’t see with our eyes such as swelling blood vessels.

According to the projects lead researcher:

“We bring together all this well-established work on expressions, these recent developments in thermal imaging, techniques for image tracking of subjects and our new algorithms into one operational system.

The researcher says that the system which is approximately 66% accurate has only been tested on volunteers, while the creators note:

“In a real, high-stress situation, we might get an even higher success rate” and “perhaps with accuracy up to 90%.”

While the accuracy of the current system doesn’t show the same results as a standard lie detector, it can be used in secret and requires no attachments to human subjects, something that could come in handy at airports and other areas of heightened security.

Do you believe this type of hidden video technology is an invasion of privacy? I would personally rather have my facial expressions read all day then go through another TSA pat down.
