Jewel-Osco Data Breach: Customers’ Credit, Debit Card Information Compromised

Officials at Jewel-Osco are warning customer of a data breach that may have given computer hackers access to credit and debit card information.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Jewel-Osco’s parent company, AB Acquisition made the announcement Friday morning. The company not only operates Jewel-Osco, but also Albertsons stores under Albertson’s LLC and ACME Markets, Jewel-Osco, and Shaw’s and Star Markets. According to a previous report by The Inquisitr, this data breach also affects SuperValu stores.

While Jewel-Osco’s parent company knows that the data breach occurred between June 22 and July 17, current reports state that AB Acquisitions has yet to confirm if hackers did in fact steal any credit card or debit card information, and they are acknowledging that this lack of information is inconvenient for their customers:

“We understand the inconvenience and concern an incident like this can cause, and we deeply regret that our customers’ data was targeted,” said Mark Bates, Schief information officer at AB Acquisition.

As previously stated by The Inquisitr, this is only the most recent event when it comes to these store data breaches. The largest data breach took place over the 2013 holiday season when Target acknowledged a similar breach. While target may have been the largest in this past year, other stores that have experienced similar problems include Goodwill, P.F. Chang’s, Michaels Stores Inc., and Neiman Marcus.

According to CBS Chicago, Jewel-Osco’s parent company, AB Acquisition, believes that the intrusion has been contained and “is confident that customers can safely use their credit and debit cards” in its stores. The company did say that “third-party data forensics experts are supporting an ongoing investigation” at this time.

“We know our customers are concerned about the security of their payment card data, and we work hard to protect it,” said Bates. “As soon as we were notified of the incident, we began working closely with SuperValu to determine what happened. It’s important to note that there is no evidence at this point that consumer data has been misused.”

According to the Chicago Tribune, AB Acquisition LLC is now offering customers who may be at risk 12 months of complimentary consumer identity protection services through AllClear ID beginning at 3:00 p.m. Friday, August 15 by calling 855-865-4449. More information will reportedly be available to consumers within 24 hours via the following websites: albertsons.com, acmemarkets.com, jewelosco.com, and shaws.com.
