Rush Limbaugh Walks Back Controversial Comments About Robin Williams Suicide

Rush Limbaugh is walking back comments that suggested “leftist” views were responsible for the suicide of Robin Williams, saying now he doesn’t presume to know why the actor and comedian killed himself.

Limbaugh made waves when he suggested that a certain political viewpoint was to blame for Williams’ suicide.

“He had it all, but he had nothing,” Limbaugh said of Williams, according to CBS DC. “He made everybody else laugh but was miserable inside. I mean, it fits a certain picture, or a certain image that the left has.” Limbaugh went on to say that a leftist political worldview is “one of pessimism and darkness, sadness — they’re never happy, are they? They’re always angry about something. No matter what they get, they’re always angry.”

The remarks drew immediate criticism, including from one of Williams’ contemporaries. Comedian Lewis Black took to Facebook to unload against the conservative radio show host. He wrote:

“F*** YOU Rush Limbaugh. Your statements were beyond cruel and stupid. They were intolerable. Enough is enough from you. You are an idiot. Don’t you ever demean the death of another human being. He was my friend. You disgust me.”

Others joined Black in criticizing Limbaugh. Tim Morrison, managing editor of Charlie Rose, also took the radio show host to task.

Now Rush Limbaugh appears to be backing off from those comments. On Wednesday he claimed that he never said Williams killed himself because of political viewpoints.

“I don’t presume to know why Robin Williams committed suicide,” he said. “I didn’t know yesterday, and I don’t know today.”

But Rush Limbaugh did continue to blame the “liberal media” for the speculation into Robin Williams’ suicide, saying, “They are the ones trying to explain it. They are the ones justifying it. They are the ones glorifying it.”
