Robin Williams Remembered: Most Heartbreaking Statements Following Death Of ‘Funniest Man In The World’

Robin Williams is being remembered by his colleagues, many of whom were lucky enough to call him their friend. Some of the most heartbreaking words have been shared by those who knew Williams best. According to Contra Costa Times, several of Williams’ co-stars have released statements following his tragic death. As most of the world knows, Williams took his own life on Monday. He was found dead inside a bedroom in his northern Calif. home by his personal assistant and longtime friend, Rebecca Erwin Spencer.

Below are some of the most moving tributes and statements in memory of Mr. Williams (tissues are not optional).

Ben Affleck, co-star, Good Will Hunting

“Heartbroken. Thanks chief — for your friendship and for what you gave the world. Robin had a ton of love in him. He personally did so much for so many people. He made Matt and my dreams come true. What do you owe a guy who does that? Everything. May you find peace my friend.”

Sally Field, co-star, Mrs. Doubtfire

“I feel stunned and so sad about Robin. I’m sad for the world of comedy. And so very sad for his family. And I’m sad for Robin. He always lit up when he was able to make people laugh, and he made them laugh his whole life long…. tirelessly. He was one of a kind. There will not be another. Please God, let him now rest in peace.”

Nathan Lane, co-star, The Birdcage

“I feel I have to say something more than just ‘heartbreaking and shocking,’ which everyone has said and I feel as well, but something a little more personal. Thus the following: One day in 1995 while riffing in the character of a snobby French toy store owner, Robin made me laugh so hard and so long that I cried. It seemed to please him to no end. Yesterday, I cried again at the thought that he was gone. What I will always remember about Robin, perhaps even more than his comic genius, extraordinary talent and astounding intellect, was his huge heart — his tremendous kindness, generosity and compassion as an acting partner, colleague and fellow traveler in a difficult world. My heartfelt condolences to his wife and family.”

Danny DeVito, co-star, Death To Smoochy

“So sad to think about this. Hard to speak. Hard to say. Hard to take. All I can think about is what a joy he was to be with. I’m devastated. I’m sending my love to his family and everyone who loved him. My heart is broken by this news.”

John Travolta, co-star, Old Dogs

“I’ve never known a sweeter, brighter, more considerate person than Robin. Robin’s commitment as an artist to lifting our mood and making us happy is compared to none. He loved us all and we loved him back.”

Dante Basco, co-star, Hook (via The Inquisitr)

“I was lucky to work with him as an actor and witness first hand the magic of what made him a legend, the wit and other worldly improv skills. As well as see him single handedly put the morale of a movie set, easily hundreds of people, on his shoulders and kept everyone laughing as they worked long hours for what seemed like months on end. And at the same time, I was fortunate to spend private times, many mornings in the makeup chair, (which with my tri-hawk hair took hours), just talking about poetry… And soft spoken and introspectively we would discuss Walt Whitman and Charles Bukowski. I can’t help feeling like it’s the death of my childhood. I guess we can’t stay in Neverland forever, we must all grow up. O’ Captain! My Captain! See you in Neverland.”

Chris Columbus, director of Mrs. Doubtfire

“We have lost one of our most inspired and gifted comic minds, as well as one of this generation’s greatest actors. To watch Robin work was a magical and special privilege. His performances were unlike anything any of us had ever seen, they came from some spiritual and otherworldly place. He truly was one of the few people who deserved the title of ‘genius.’ We were friends for 21 years. Our children grew up together, he inspired us to spend our lives in San Francisco and I loved him like a brother. The world was a better place with Robin in it. And his beautiful legacy will live on forever.”

Steven Spielberg, director of Hook, and dear friend of Mr. Williams

“Robin was a lightning storm of comic genius and our laughter was the thunder that sustained him. He was a pal and I can’t believe he’s gone.”

Matt Damon, co-star, Good Will Hunting (via Movie Pilot).

“Robin brought so much joy into my life and I will carry that joy with me forever. He was such a beautiful man. I was lucky to know him and I will never, ever forget him. I truly hope the people in the media can find it within themselves to give his family some privacy during this horrible time.”

Several actors, co-stars, and friends of Robin Williams also left their heartfelt messages on Twitter. For many, it wasn’t easy to find the words to describe their feelings of complete devastation. The world was shocked that a man who made so many people laugh was so eaten up on the inside. Those closest to him knew that he was suffering from severe depression, but there was a light in his eyes that suggested that he was going to be okay.

So many people saw sides of Williams that the public wasn’t privileged to. Each and every person that ever met him had something wonderful to say about him. There is no question that he’s going to be missed.

Billy Crystal, co-star, Father’s Day, and dear friend of Mr. Williams

Scott Weinger, co-star, Aladdin (the voice of Aladdin)

Caroline Goodall, co-star, Hook

Mara Wilson & Lisa Jakub co-stars, Mrs. Doubtfire

Minnie Driver, co-star, Good Will Hunting

Josh Charles, co-star, Dead Poet’s Society
