Boy Rescues Dog From Storm Drain: Brave 9-Year-Old With A Fear Of ‘Tight Places’ Saves Neighbor’s 15-Year-Old Shih Tzu

A brave boy rescues a dog from a storm drain despite his fear of “tight places” and bugs. In a report by Examiner, 9-year-old Grant Snodgrass in Plano, Texas heard that his neighbor’s 15-year-old Shih Tzu, “Macy,” had gotten herself in a bad situation and he helped save her.

As WFAA 8 further reports, the incident happened Sunday when Grant learned from his parents that a neighbor’s dog had fallen down a gutter. He thought that sounded “scary” and ran to the scene to check it out for himself.

When the 9-year-old noticed someone trying to reach inside the gutter to get the small dog out, he was unable to retrieve him. Macy had slipped and fallen into the storm drain on a walk.

The boy describes the event:

“The neighbor was right here, leaning down with the leash, trying to get it over the dog’s neck; but when the leash got onto it’s neck, it always backed away.”

After 45 minutes of trying to get the Shih Tzu out, Grant’s father and the neighbor opened up the manhole. Having someone go down and get Macy was the only way she was going to get out. Grant realized he was the only able to get down due to limited space.

“I had to go down the hole; I couldn’t do anything else,” Grant says.

The brave boy managed to rescue the dog from the storm drain. This is not a place anyone wants to be if they have an aversion to creepy crawlies in a slimy, confined place.

Grant recalls:

“It was pretty creepy. It felt slimy, there were bugs everywhere, and water everywhere. I bumped my head… it only hurt for a second. Then I handed up the dog and I got out.”

The boy’s parents are very proud of their son for not just saving the neighbor’s dog, but putting aside his anxiety over being in such places.

Grant’s mother, Liz Snodgrass, reveals:

“This is bigger than you’d expect, for just a kid going down a hole. Grant has dealt with some anxiety, specifically with small spaces and bugs.”

Liz goes on to say that she and her husband watch with “our hearts in our chests, just pounding with pride.”

The awesome boy, who’s about to enter the third grade, admits he doesn’t know where the “courage” came from to go down the manhole like he did, but his heroic actions were rewarded.

“I went to Baskin-Robbins!” an excited Grant Snodgrass said.

Grant said he’d go back down and save the dog again if he had to.
