‘Hercules’ Still Not Quite The Flop We Expected

Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson as the titular character, has fallen off of movie news reports. While it would be logical to assume that the silence is because Hercules is a flop that nobody wants to talk about, closer analysis suggests the opposite may be the case.

Remember The Legend of Hercules? It’s forgivable if you don’t. The Legend of Hercules, starring Kellan Lutz as Hercules, opened earlier this year to poor reviews, and poor box office. Reports are that The Legend of Hercules failed to recoup its $70 million budget.

With that in mind, Forbes can be likewise be forgiven for predating that Hercules — which cost a whopping $110 million to produce — had poor tracking leading into opening weekend, and was supported by a half-hearted advertising campaign, would be dead on arrival. In fact, Forbes noted that if Hercules failed, it would be the first big-budget box office flop of the summer of 2014, which had relatively fewer big budget movies than previous years.

Forbes noted thatHercules was not a flop, and then the one-two punch of San Diego Comic-Con and Marvel’s Guardian of the Galaxy knocked Hercules out of the movie news rotation.

This weekend, Hercules fell to number seven at the box office, behind the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, Lucy, and Step Up: All In. Despite the potential embarrassment for Dwayne Johnson about coming in behind a much hyped, but domestically ignored, dance film franchise, Hercules has already earned back it’s budget with $25 million to spare. Meaning, as reported by The Inqusitr, Hercules wasn’t a flop, but it wasn’t a box office smash either.

Meanwhile, The Rock has other films on the horizon.

New still photographs were released on the Fast &Furious 7‘s official Facebook page. The stills show Johnson against a green screen and what appears to be a gun turret.

The Rock also fanned the flames of nerd excitement during San Diego Comic-Con. While in San Diego, Johnson surprised fans by buying out three theaters for screenings of Hercules, which Johnson attended.

According to Wrestlezone.com, The Rock also confirmed that he will appear in a yet-to-be-named DC Comics film.

Dwayne Johnson will next appear in Fast & Furious 7, due out April of 2015.
