Sam Smith Album Update: New Song Remixed by Boston DJ

Sam Smith, the singer behind hit album In the Lonely Hour, is known across the pond for his fabulous fashion sense and smooth voice. Smith’s also related to fellow Brit musician and bad girl Lily Allen, but they don’t sound like carbon copies of one another.

Openly gay, the album is based upon a boy who broke Smith’s heart.

In the Lonely Hour is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back. I think I’m over it now, but I was in a very dark place. I kept feeling lonely in the fact that I hadn’t felt love before.

But an Achy Breaky Heart isn’t the only hurdle Sam Smith had to tackle in order to embark on a (so far) successful music career. During an interview with Channel 4’s 4Music, the crooner admitted something very personal.

“I actually have OCD really bad, and it’s getting a bit worse at the moment,” he said. “I have to check taps… before I leave the house, to make sure I’ve checked everything in case it floods.”

With Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey among his influences Sam Smith’s musical palate is decidedly American. Perhaps it’s no surprise then that Sam himself is determined to break into the American music market as early as possible.

Sam took a big first step in expanding his presence several nights ago in Hollywood. Smith and British Electronic Music duo Disclosure played Jimmy Kimmel Live! and performed their 2012 hit Latch. The two had the crowd rocking the whole time; the only thing hotter than the act was the weather itself. You can watch the whole performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live’s YouTube channel.

But that’s not all Smith is in the news for today. Perhaps Sam’s biggest hit is I’m Not The Only One. Written by Smith and songwriter Jimmy Napes, the song is a powerful soul/pop fusion shows off Sam Smith’s impressive vocal range. An impressively shot music video for the song is on Sam Smiths’ YouTube channel. The single was released in the states on Saturday, August 2 and will come to the U.K. at the end of the month. Furthermore, you can order the entire album on iTunes.

Not even out a full week, I’m Not The Only One has already warranted a remix by world famous Boston DJ Armand Van Helden. The catchy tune stands well on its own, but the Van Helden treatment takes it to a whole other level. The remix dropped three days ago and can be found on Smith’s SoundCloud account. Whether Armand’s in an improvement or not, it shows the burgeoning stateside popularity of the 22-year-old Londoner.
