Carol Burnett to Appear Today, Tomorrow on ‘All My Children’

Posted: September 6, 2011

Ahead of its late-December final curtain, stage and screen vet Carol Burnett will reprise her longtime-recurring role on ABC’s soap All My Children in appearances today and tomorrow.

All My Children has been a fixture of the daytime lineup on ABC for four decades, and its final episode will air on September 26th. Burnett, now 78, has been a fan of the show for much of its run- so much so that a role was created specifically for her many years ago. Burnett debuted on the show in 1983 playing the meddling Verla Grubbs, and throughout the 80′s, appeared in its storylines, reprising the role.

All My Children executive producer Julie Hanan Carruthers commented on Burnett’s final appearance before the show’s last airing later this month:

“It is our honor and pleasure to welcome back Carol Burnett to Pine Valley. Verla Grubbs is a beloved member of the All My Children family and we look forward to reprising her character.”

After 40 years, All My Children will be replaced by chat-show The Chew at the end of September. Much handwringing has ensued over the show’s cancellation, and FarmVille and its distracting effects on the predominantly female, stay-at-home viewership of the show was briefly blamed after its somewhat shocking cancellation.

Earlier this week, All My Children star Susan Lucci made headlines when she lashed out at ABC daytime execs for canceling the long-running soap in a stunning epilogue to her book All My Life.

Will you be tuning in to say goodbye to the beloved soap when it airs for the last time? (Below, a vintage clip of Burnett on All My Children in the 80′s.)

So is it ending in late December or September? Confusing. And yes, it will be missed. I watched the very first episode back in 1970 with my mother – I was 10. I've been following it loosely all these years, and will dearly miss the long-time characters of Tad Martin, Liza Colby, Jesse and Angie, the irrepressible Opal, and of course the legendary Erica Kane. What memories.

Yes, I will miss it – like many others, I have been watching it since it's inception — and just for the record – just like I don't watch "The View" because of the hateful and ingnorant who are on that show, I will not watch "The Chew". The number of shows that I watch on ABC is getting smaller and smaller.

I will not be watching the Chew or anything else they put on that replaces these soaps. They can ignore my emails and letters. They have ignored the fury of the soap fan. What Mr. Fronz can't ignore is rating. What doesn't make sense is that he has alienated his audience and if the soap fans have any back bone and fortitude any chance the Chew being sucessful. ABC should look into this and cancel Mr. Fronz contract.

  5. I do not watch a lot of tv anymore stopped watching soaps a long time ago got to crazy and nasty .I don't watch talk shows either for the same reason!

  6. I read recently that All My Children and One Life to Live will continue..only online. I've been watching them both since their beginnings. They were Mother's shows..I've gone for months or even years at time without seeing them and then picked them right up again. Along with General Hospital, they're the only soaps I ever had any interest in. I 'went' to high school with Erica, Chuck, and the bunch in Pine Valley. ;-)

Ah yes, I forgot about Chuck! You may not go back this far, but I loved Phillip and Tara. They were the first "young love" storyline on the show – messed up by Erica, of course! They were so young and romantic. I'm not even sure how many times Erica's been married now! And she still looks so fabulous! ;-) And later on, I loved Jenny and Greg's love story – messed up by Liza! Then there was Nina Cortland….need I go on? ;-)

Hey! Fancy meeting you here! And yes, I'm sure they discussed it in detail! Amazingly enough, what I remember watching at your house was….wait for it….Dark Shadows! ;-)

Oh, yes, I remember my mom watching it on a little tv on the kitchen table and holding up a shirt over the screen during a part she didn't want us to see! I think it was a witch or something being burned at the stake.

Betty, I have been a fan of All My Children since it started, too. I read that it may get picked up on the Internet and that Susan Lucci has signed and several others to continue production.
