Michael Johns Had ‘Something To Say’ — More Details Surrounding His Shocking Death
In 2008, Michael Johns told PEOPLE that all he could ask for as a singer and artist is “a chance — just a fair shot of showing America or the world that I can sing and I’ve got something to say.”
Johns won hearts across the country on Season 7 of American Idol, singing his way into the top ten as the oldest of all the finalists. He said there was something special about that. “The one cool thing about getting older is that you do feel more comfortable in your own skin.”
Fellow finalists, Idol judges and other staff and Michael Johns fans across the world were stunned on Saturday, August 2, to learn that the 35-year old singer had passed away. Now, TMZ reveals more details around the tragedy.
According to the report, Johns twisted his ankle on Thursday, July 31. He visited a doctor, having suffered pain from swelling and bruising that had traveled to his leg. Doctors were not able to find anything and sent him home. On Friday, August 1, Michael Johns was found unresponsive while sleeping on a friend’s couch. By the time paramedics arrived, Johns had already passed away.
It has been widely reported that a blood clot in his ankle is the cause.
The family released a statement on Michael Johns’ death: “Our family is devastated by the passing of our beloved Michael, a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from all corners of the globe.”
Before moving to Georgia from his native Australia to pursue his dream of singing, Johns had been awarded a scholarship to play tennis.
Johns said it was a backstage conversation with one of his favorite bands that inspired him to take the leap and make the move.
But the road to American Idol wasn’t nearly as easy as America made his journey as an artist once he finally made it on the show.
Former Idol judge, Simon Cowell, was one of many that took to Twitter to mourn.

Fox, FemantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment released a joint statement on Johns’ death that read “Michael Johns was an incredible talent and we are deeply saddened by the news of his passing. He was a part of our American Idol family and he will be truly missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”
