Groupon Offers Discount For College Tuition

National Louis University in Chicago, Illinois has become the first University to offer deep discounts on tuition rates through social buying platform Groupon.

The tuition discount is available to students seeking a teaching degree and provides 60% off tuition for any entry-level graduate teaching course.

The deal will go live on Tuesday and will discount the three credit introduction course from $2,232 to just $950. Buyers should be warned that the offer is only available to the first 25 people to purchase the credit and students will still need to earn 33 more credits to earn their full graduate degree.

The deal also requires that at least 15 buyers purchased the deal before the end of Wednesday.

Jocelyn Zivin, vice president of marketing and communications for National Louis, told the Chicago Tribune:

“There are all kinds of factors in the K-12 world that are really discouraging teachers and people seeking teaching degrees.”

With an IPO in the waiting now is the perfect time for Groupon to try new markets and the education field with rising tuition costs is definitely one way they can reach out to new customers who are truly in need of their help.

Would you be willing to buy a tuition discount from Groupon? If the program is extended to more Universities I would expect many more students to purchase the discounts in an attempt to lower final financial aid bills when their time in University comes to an end.
