Miley Cyrus’ Topless Instagram Photo Was One-Upped By Rita Ora. You’ll Never Guess How…

Miley Cyrus has become synonymous with mainstream pop culture’s newest wave of in-your-face sexuality. Although Cyrus hasn’t really achieved in this title doing anything that Madonna and Janet Jackson didn’t do before her, her stage shows in particular certainly don’t seem tame compared to the sex-pop divas’ signature work.

But is Miley starting to have an influence of her own? A week after Cyrus posted the following shot to her Instagram, one British pop star followed up with the a similar photo that may have beat out Miley is this round of the provocative games.

But Cyrus may be beat out by another pop star. Miley was just flashing her chest to a bunch of rocks in the desert. Rita Ora? She decided to give all of Los Angeles a taste of what’s underneath her shirt.

Both Ora and Miley have their lists of other users they are following set to private, so there’s no way to confirm whether or not Rita Ora even saw Cyrus’ photo first. Is there just something in the pop music vodka-red-bull kool-aid this week that’s going to cause an Ebola-like epidemic of topless Instagram shots?

At the very least, it’s one of the more interesting shots that Miley has uploaded to Instagram in the past few weeks. Although Cyrus did also gain some media attention for posting a picture of riot grrl [sic] — feminist punk — founder Kathleen Hanna from several years ago, when she also came on stage in not much more than underwear with her band Bikini Kill.

Hanna’s newest band, The Julie Ruin, reposted an NY Mag article to its Facebook about Miley’s posting of the picture. Below a fan shared a comment that Kathleen had made when asked about Cyrus calling herself a feminist at a recent show.

I saw the Julie Ruin, Kathleen mentioned that she was recently asked what she thought about Miley calling herself a feminist. Her response was “that’s the sound of 3 million girls typing feminist into google” I’m pretty sure Kathleen’s not the kind to hate on other women. If a different audience discover Kathleen surely that’s a good thing.

What do you think? Is Miley Cyrus big enough to be setting trends for the likes of Rita Ora? Does her new-found love Kathleen Hanna make you wonder if she might take a pro-feminist stance on her next album like Beyoncé?
