Surrogate Mom Will Raise Abandoned Baby Of Twins: Parents Only Took Boy’s Healthy Twin Sister

A surrogate mom will raise an abandoned baby of twins she gave birth to because the parents only took the boy’s healthy twin sister.

Pattaramon Chanbua, a Thai woman living in poverty, agreed to be a surrogate mother for a West Australian couple who wanted a baby. She agreed to carry their babies for $16,000, but when one of the twins that were born was diagnosed with Down Syndrome, the parents opted to only take the boy’s sister. The Australian couple urged Chanbua to abort the boy when it was discovered he had Down Syndrome, but she refused because it’s considered sinful in her country to do that.

ABC News reports in this shocking story that the 6-month-old boy, Gammy, has expensive medical bills and Chanbua cannot afford his treatments.

Getting a surrogate mother in Australia is reportedly a difficult process, and that’s why the Australian couple had a woman from Thailand do this.

Executive director of Surrogacy Australia Rachel Kunde says:

“Someone’s left a baby behind and separated it from its twin and pretty much just disregarded that it was their child, which is something that is just unfathomable for people to think about.”

Prime Minister Tony Abbott expresses his disbelief in the surrogate mom being forced to raise an abandoned baby of twins:

“I guess it illustrates some of the pitfalls involved in this particular business. It’s a very, very sad story and I hate to think that a child could be abandoned like that.”

Abbott is looking into what might be possible in helping the surrogate mother raise the baby boy.

Gammy also has a hole in his heart. He’s currently hospitalized and being treated.

According to The Telegraph, Chanbua, who lives in Bangkok, also has a a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old.

She says:

“I felt sorry for the boy. It was like this is the adults’ fault and who is he to have to endure something like this even thought it’s not his fault? Why does he have to be abandoned while the other baby has it easy? I feel sorry for him. I don’t know what to do. I chose to have him, not to hurt him. I love him. He was in my tummy for nine months, it’s like my child. I treat him like my other children, never think you are not my child and I don’t care for you, never.”

A donation page has been set up for the surrogate mother raising the rejected baby. GoFundMe.com and so far has raised more than $100,000.
