Dog Survives Fall From 30-Foot Bridge In NYC And Barely Avoids Getting Hit By Cars

A dog survives a fall from a 30-foot bridge in New York City and barely misses being run over while stuck in busy traffic. The incident happened Tuesday evening when the animal was believed to be thrown over the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway bridge. The pit bull earned the name “Meeker” since that was the street he landed on.

Jon Ernsberger, a witness who stopped to help the innocent dog, tells the New York Post:

“I thought for sure it would be dead. It had blood coming out of its mouth. It tried to stand up and it was whimpering.”

Lacie Zassman also stopped to see what she could do. She says:

“When I showed up, he was just breathing really heavily not making any noise…It looked like impact had broken his bones.”

The 75-pound dog was panting and struggling to move around after he landed, witnesses say. People offered Meeker water and blankets. Some poster boards were used to make a stretcher out of to load him into Ernsberger’s car. He and Zassman took the dog to the Veterinary Emergency & Referral Group in Cobble Hill. It was there that he got treatment for a lung problem and an injured front leg. Positive Tails, a philanthropic group that pays for animals suffering abuse, covered Meeker’s expenses.

Meeker is in stable condition after surviving the 30-foot fall. On Wednesday he reportedly began eating scraps of turkey that clinic workers gave him.

Dr. Brett Levitzke of VERG shares:

“He’s sore, definitely from landing. Fortunately he didn’t sustain any broken bones… He’s getting a lot of love here. He’s a really sweet dog.”

The pit bull is said to be a sweetheart and shows no aggression whatsoever.

Meeker didn’t have a microchip or collar on. According to ABC 7 News, another eyewitness claims to have seen the dog thrown from a car by someone.

The report adds that “Wookie” is the real name of the dog. He was reunited with his owner, Oliver Rivera, on Thursday following a police report the man filed about his missing dog. Police are trying to determine if “Wookie” jumped off the bridge or was thrown from it. Rivera explains that a friend of his took the dog for a walk, but he wiggled out of his harness and ran off. The vet’s office confirms that there weren’t any additional signs of abuse on the animal.

“I thought he was a goner,” says Rivera. “It’s good to have him back.”

It’s not often a dog survives this kind of fall. 30-feet is a long drop that can easily kill anybody. Meeker is extremely lucky he didn’t die — or suffer more severe injuries. Dr. Levitzke tells ABC 7 News that if it weren’t for the Good Samaritans who helped the dog, he would be dead for sure.
