Tony Stark Gets a Shocking New Storyline in Superior Iron Man

Tony Stark, the eccentric genius/billionaire/playboy/philanthropist better known as Iron Man, appears to be the latest victim of the Marvel character transformation obsession. Following news of a female Thor and a black Captain America, fans have learned that Tony Stark will soon be unleashing his dark side on the world after a move from Stark Tower in Manhattan to the West Coast.

Come November, Tony Stark’s massive ego will lead him to offer a version of his Extemis technology to the residents of San Franciso in a “mad genius” move that is intended to leave us questioning whether or not he’s still one of the good guys. In Superior Iron Man, which is intended to take the place of Marvel’s current Iron Man comic, Tony Stark’s alter ego is pitted against Daredevil after he unleashes an Extemis based mobile app that offers users beauty, perfection, and possible immortality. Daredevil, who has also recently moved to San Francisco, doesn’t take kindly to the idea that millions of ordinary people are going to have access to armor that comes from within their body as on-demand protection for whatever escapades they’re planning.

Initially, some speculated that this shocking new storyline would be the result of Tony Stark being under some sort of mind-control scheme — similar to how Spider-Man was manipulated by the villainous Otto-Octavius in the Superior Spider-Man series. However, Marvel’s editor-in-chief Axel Alonso has stated that this is in fact the “real” Iron Man — just a darker, more cunning side than what we’ve previously seen.

On Marvel.com, series writer Tom Taylor offers his insight into what we can expect from Superior Iron Man.

There is a big shift coming for Tony. I can’t say too much because it’s tied to AXIS, a great series that I’ve been fortunate enough to be reading as Rick Remender crafts it, but the old Tony is back. Arrogant. Cunning. Witty. Superficial. Completely self-obsessed. Superior.

In addition to appearances in Superior Iron Man, the newer and certainly more controversial version of Tony Stark will be making appearances in crossover Avengers titles. Fans should also keep in mind that Iron Man will be getting a new suit of armor to match his changed person. It’s simple yet flashy, with cool blues taking over Iron Man’s trademark red and gold look. The new look was designed by Yildray Cinar, an Istanbul-based artist best known for his previous work on Jay Faerber’s Image series Noble Causes and the DC Comics Teen Titans series.
