CM Punk: Retired WWE Superstar Could Be On Track To Become The Next Jim Ross

CM Punk may be “never, ever” returning to the ring, but it seems the fan-friendly wrestler could still have a career behind the scenes at the WWE.

The WWE Superstar stepped away from the ring earlier this year, opting for an early retirement due to nagging injuries and the wear and tear of constant wrestling.

Since then fans have obsessed over a possible comeback to the ring, but it’s become clear that CM Punk no longer has a desire to wrestle. In a recent interview he said in no uncertain terms that his days in the ring are over, and the WWE has responded by letting his contract expire and then adding him to the “Alumni” section of WWE.com.

CM Punk may be done with wrestling, but he could still have a future in entertainment. Punk recently hosted the red carpet at the AP Music Awards last Monday, and over the weekend took a turn as correspondent at San Diego’s Comic-Con.

“He’s definitely moving on, and he shows some promise in his new career,” wrote Sean Rueter of Cageside Seats.

This could lead to an interesting career path for CM Punk. There is speculation that he may not have burned his WWE bridges entirely, and that several other former WWE stars have repaired their relationships and returned to the league.

With CM Punk’s aptitude in the realm of interviewing, that could leave a very interesting option — ringside commentator. The WWE has suffered a bit of a vacuum since the 2013 retirement of longtime announcer Jim Ross.

The current announcing team of Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler and John “Bradshaw” Layfield has only been together since April, and could certainly use the star power CM Punk would bring.

It is purely speculation at this point, but CM Punk could have some motivation for returning to the WWE. His new wife AJ Lee is still under contract for quite a while, and her star is rising so much that it appears she’ll be a fixture for quite a while. With the rigorous tour schedule, joining the WWE’s ringside team would allow Punk to be with her.
