Rev. Al Sharpton: New Voter ID Laws Because A Black Man Is In The White House?

The always fiery Rev. Al Sharpton cut the ribbon at a new voting rights center in Birmingham, Alabama, on Wednesday, and as usual he had some choice words for detractors of the work that the center hopes to do, reported local NBC affiliate Alabama 13.

The same ID that was good enough for Nixon, Ford, Reagan Carter, Clinton, both Bushes — why when we get to Obama we need to some special ID? We’re the same people that we identified with before.

Sharpton was quick to recall imagery from the time when black citizens made strides with the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Although Al never lived in a time before 1865’s Fourteenth Amendment guaranteed black U.S. citizens like Sharpton the right to vote, he was around during a time when small-scale regulations did make it difficult for racial minorities to make it to the ballot. Late last year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down this portion of the Voting Rights Act in the case Shelby County Vs. Holder, prompting outrage from minority leaders like Sharpton.

Back in the 60’s there were so many people that came out and volunteered. Children and senior citizens lost their lives, gave their blood, shed their tears just for this cause so we must start this cause all over again.

As usual for Rev. Al, his comments have been far from universally praised. Alabama Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead accused Sharpton of “race-baiting” in an official statement, reported Al.com.

Alabama and several other states have passed Voter ID laws to ensure that the voter is who they say they are. However, Sharpton claims the basis for these new voter ID laws is to ‘disenfranchise black and minority voters, the elderly, the poor and young people’. Sharpton knows better, and he should be ashamed for making such absurd comments… Sharpton has proven himself to be a race-baiting liberal whose election year activities are designed to serve one purpose: to gin up racial animosity and hostility in order to boost turnout of Democrat voters.

But Rev. Al was undeterred by negative statements about his reasons for fighting the ruling in southern states.

The Republican Party wants to be so upset that I’m here, we’re going to stay a while.

The Rev. Al Sharpton is also making news in the north of the country this week for meeting with Mayor Bill de Blasio over an incident where police allegedly caused a man to asphyxiate when attempted to restrain him, reported New York Daily News.
