The Mega Millions jackpot went without a winner again on July 29, marking a full month of drawings without a jackpot winner and sending the top prize creeping ever closer to the $100 million mark.
The Mega Millions jackpot now stands at a healthy $87 million up for grabs in the next drawing, to be held Friday, August 1. The previous big winner came on June 27, when one ticket in Texas hit all six numbers to score a $33 million jackpot. That win came just for drawings after a ticket in Michigan had won a $66 million Mega Millions jackpot.
While the Texas winner has not yet come forward, lottery officials in Michigan said that have scheduled a press conference for Thursday and the $66 million winner will announce herself then.
And yes, the winner is “young woman,” according to Michigan lottery spokesperson Jeff Holyfield. But Holyfield would not reveal any other details about the winner before the press conference.
He did say that the winner waited more than a month to claim her life-altering prize because, “she wanted to make sure she was taking all the right steps,” he said. “When you’re talking about that kind of money, you suddenly have a lot of options.”
While Tuesday’s Mega Millions drawing saw no jackpot winner, it was also the fourth drawing of the nine held in July that also failed to produce a winner of the Mega Millions second-prize. Matching the first five numbers but not the Mega Ball wins a lucky ticket holder a cool million bucks.
But once again, there were no lucky ticket holders. At least none of those who bought the 17,742,006 tickets sold, who were lucky to the tune of $1 million.
There were, however, 21 third-prize winners, who matched the Mega Ball plus four of the first five numbers. While that combination seems tantalizingly close to a Mega Millions jackpot win, in fact, it is good for only $5,000, the amount taken home by the 17 players outside of California who matched that combination.
California saw four third-prize winners, and under that state’s pari-mutuel payout system, they will each take home $4,525. Before taxes, of course.

If taken in a single payment, the Friday jackpot will be worth an estimated $51 million.
