‘Interstellar’: You Need A Super-Secret Code To Watch The Trailer… And We’ll Give It To You!

Interstellar, the new film from The Dark Knight, and The Dark Night Rises director and Inception writer Christopher Nolan, previewed a trailer at last weekend’s Comic-Con with the film’s star, Matthew McConaughey in tow. Fans were “blown away.”

Now, just days later, the Interstellar website is up and running, and it offers fans an opportunity to see a hi-res trailer of the film on their computers. But you need an access code to see the trailer… we’ll get to that.

Rumors and speculation as to Chris Nolan’s directorial followup to The Dark Knight Rises had fans foaming at the mouth for any information they could get on the space travel meets family drama epic. With the tagline, “Man was born on Earth. He was never meant to die here,” fans wondered if Interstellar would fall victim to the SF movie trope of too much eye candy and not enough content. After hearing McConaughey and Nolan speak last weekend at San Diego’s Comic-Con and seeing the trailer, it appears as if Interstellar is going to do a full one-eighty on that trope.

Interstellar feels much more akin to Contact – which also starred McConaughey – or the ill-concevied Signs than a full-fledged SF epic. The story of Interstellar seems to center on the effect on humanity – on the population as a whole, and on the astronaut’s families in particular – that is experienced when humans finally take an interstellar voyage to save mankind. Yes, just from the trailer alone, we see that Interstellar involves some magnificent effects technology – in fact, according to Deadline, Nolan reportedly shot the film in IMAX – but it’s clear from the first words McConaughey speaks in the trailer (complete with that familiar and comforting southern drawl) that the film is more philosophy than special effects:

“We used to look up at the sky and wonder at our place in the stars. Now we just look down, and worry about our place in the dirt.”

The website for Interstellar that Nolan’s team has cooked up is very reminiscent of the one Steven Spielberg came up with for A.I. For the moment, the site just shows an ultra-res landscape of a rural farm – complete with fluffy white clouds moving through the sky overhead. There is a place to type in your access code – (we’ll get to it!) – and when you press submit the trailer is available in several languages. No doubt that between now and when Interstellar is released, the website will provide more codes and puzzles that unlock more content to get fans psyched up for the film.

Look for Insterstellar in theaters on November 7th.

Oh yeah – that code. Go to the Interstellar website and type in 7201969 as the access code. (That’s the date that Apollo 11 landed on the moon!)
