Ed Sheeran Battling Eric Clapton For Number One

The Inquisitr recently reported that pop star Ed Sheeran had hit the number one spot on the UK Billboard charts for his latest album x, but now Ed’s spot may be in jeopardy. Eric Clapton is looking to knock Sheeran down from his throne with his album The Breeze.

According to NME, Ed Sheeran is still ahead of Eric Clapton & Friends’ latest release, but that could change by the end of the week. Sheeran is on the verge of holding the number one spot on the charts for the sixth week in a row. Meanwhile, Eric Clapton is steadily rising up the chart. The final placings of Ed Sheeran and Eric Clapton will be revealed on BBC Radio 1 on Sunday, August 3.

The Breeze, the album up against Ed Sheeran, was organized by Eric Clapton as a tribute to the late songwriter JJ Cale, who passed away last year. Various guest artists are featured on the LP, including Mark Knopfler from the Dire Straits, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, and John Mayer.

Digital Spy reported that Ed Sheeran should maintain his number one spot for several weeks to come. The last time an artist held the number one spot for as many consecutive weeks as Ed Sheeran was Adele with her record-breaking album 21. But Clapton’s The Breeze is only 4,500 copies behind Sheeran.

Further down on the chart below Sheeran and Clapton is the new band Neon Jungle in the number six spot with their debut album Welcome to the Jungle. Some other new additions to the chart include Cher Lloyd at number 12 with Sorry I’m Late, Theory of a Deadman at 19 and The Struts at 34.

Digital Spy also reported that the midweek sales report of the UK charts show that while Ed Sheeran battles it out with Eric Clapton, the band Magic! is competing with Bars & Melody for the number one spot in singles. Magic!’s song “Rude” is up against Bars & Melody’s “Hopeful.”
