I still remember when the very first heart transplant was done and the incredible reaction to the news. Even though the patient died shortly afterwards that boundary had been crossed and we knew that we had the ability to perform human transplants and for many people since then their world has changed because of this knowledge.
The biggest problem facing heart transplants is that live organs that have been harvested for transplanting have had a very short “life-span” and have been transported by the quickest method possible in coolers full of ice.
This is the problem that a company called TransMedics has been trying to solve with a system named Organ Care System, or OCS. While it still might be early in the game the company has now proven that OCS does work as you can see in the video below.
Oh, and yes that is a live beating heart in the box.
