Skyrim won’t have weapon and armor degradation

Posted: August 27, 2011

Personally, I never was much of a fan of being interrupted from my adventures by having my weapon give out on me, usually at an inopportune moment. For those of you like me, we won’t have to worry about that with Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Bethesda’s VP of marketing, Pete Hines, confirmed on Twitter that Skyrim will not have weapon or armor degradation. Instead, the focus will be on creating weapons and armor through crafting and improving them.

While I personally may not be a fan of being forced to repair my gear, I can see how this could end up being an unwelcome change to Elder Scrolls fans. It did add a certain layer of realism and, as a result, immersion to previous games, but I would hardly consider this a dealbreaker.

What do you think?

  1. All for immersion but not having to carry hammers big plus.

  2. Yeah, at the end of the day, with the new feature of improvements, having to use materials to get your weapon back up to par before you can even make improvements would just be a pain in the ass and render the new features under utilized by most players.

  3. this is the worst possible thing they could have done. we shouldn't even have a blacksmith shop if we cant repair our armor. so after I get done with two trolls, a dragon, and a giant my armor is in pristine condition. bs.

  4. oh and to you saying : "Personally, I never was much of a fan of being interrupted from my adventures by having my weapon give out on me, usually at an inopportune moment" that's YOUR own bloody fault. that's what happens when you don't repair your armor or at the very least head to a smith shop.

  5. You need to calm down. Blacksmiths sell weapons, so there is still purpose to them. And the skill is still being used. There's no need to sit here and insult people. This is a feature in a video game. Please analyze your life a little. Ultimately, the internet's general consensus with the inclusion of the new features is against yours, so life must go on. You can always just play Oblivion and continue repairing your broken armor while the rest of us play Skyrim.
