DC Comic Movie And TV Universes Will Never Collide, Some Heroes Are Movies Only

DC Comics Geoff Johns gave the definitive word Monday on if there will be any sharing between the movie universe based on the Superman V Batman: Dawn of Justice film and the growing TV universe based on Arrow and The Flash. The word is not only “No” but key characters will be completely locked out of TV appearances even if there are separate universes.

When asked at a Television Critics Association press tour about the possibility of seeing different versions of the Justice League on the big and small screens, Johns told IGN: “You’ll see a lot of DC universe characters [on The Flash and Arrow]. You won’t see Batman or Superman. We’re on production on Batman V Superman now. So you’ll see characters like The Atom or Firestorm, but no not Batman or Superman right now [on TV].”

Arrow fans had hoped to see Stephen Amell make an appearance in Dawn of Justice but the Green Arrow / Oliver Queen actor confirmed that he would not make a big screen appearance. DC Comics has even gone so far to keep references to Wayne Enterprises or Metropolis out of the show so far before it decided to work in Flash.

The decision to keep the universes separate is understandable though given the production schedules between TV and film.

“It’s a separate universe than film so that the filmmakers can tell the story that’s best for film,” Johns said. “While we explore something different in a different corner of the DC universe.”

“We will not be integrating the film and television universes,” he added to remove all doubt.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will kick things off in May 2016, going head to head with Marvel’s Captain America 3. According to sources with Nikki Finke, this is the current line-up of DC Comic films afterward.

  • July 2016 – Shazam
  • Xmas 2016 – Sandman
  • May 2017 – Justice League
  • July 2017 – Wonder Woman
  • Xmas 2017 – Flash and Green Lantern team-up
  • May 2018 – Man Of Steel 2

Dwayne Johnson hinted at the possibility that he will be starring in Shazam in an interview released earlier today, giving credence to this list. Meanwhile, Joseph Gordon Leavit is tagged for Sandman and Gal Gadot is locked in for Wonder Woman with her Superman V Batman appearance. With the roster of other Justice League characters like Cyborg being filled, the question is who will be able to fill the shoes of Flash and Green Lantern?
