Philipp Lahm Retires From International Football Following World Cup Title

Philipp Lahm captained Germany to its fourth World Cup title and now, after almost a week-long celebration with fans, he has announced his retirement from international competition. The news comes as somewhat of a surprise, since the 5-foot-7 striker is only 30 years old.

This is not considered old in sports by any means and many go on to successful careers long past the 30 mark. Lahm — called the Little Giant by some — has opted for leaving on a high note, after being capped 113 times during the last decade.

Prior to his retirement announcement, Philipp Lahm was Germany’s captain since 2010, following Michael Ballack’s injury at the South Africa World Cup. However, Lahm says this was a decision he had been pondering for a long time.

“This was a decision which had matured during last season,” Lahm told Sport Bild magazine via the Daily Mail.

During his illustrious career with the national team, Philipp Lahm won the World Cup title with Germany, the Bundesliga twice, the DFB-Pokal twice, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the German Supercup, and the FIFA Club World Cup for Bayern Munich. Not many footballers retire from the National Football Team at 30. However, German Football Federation (DFB) president Wolfgang Niersbach said he has not try to change Lahm’s mind:

“Philipp called me this morning and informed me personally of this step. During our talk, I realized very quickly that it would have been pointless trying to talk him out of his decision.

“He was not only an exceptional player for the national team in these 10 years, but was always a role model. I have thanked him for everything that he has achieved for the DFB.”

In an open letter on the DBF website, Philipp Lahm talked about his reasons for retirement and thanked fans for a “wonderful time.”

“‘I am happy and grateful that the end of my career end with the national team coincides with winning the World Cup in Brazil.”

Germany’s coach, Joachim Low, had only praise for his captain, Philipp Lahm, saying in part:

“Philipp is a model professional who puts the team’s success above everything else. His intelligence and versatility as a player have allowed him to play at the highest level on the international stage for many years. He is a world-class player, as he again demonstrated over the last few weeks in Brazil. He crowned his outstanding career by winning the World Cup title. Philipp was always a significant and extremely important contact for me, and I discussed our ideas with him. He can be proud of his career because he is a magnificent player with a big heart, passion and character, who has achieved a lot for the DFB. Philipp will continue to be a vital part of the FC Bayern team. I wish him all the best both professionally and privately. Thank you, Philipp!”
