Would You Join The Hairy Legs Club? New Viral Trend Sees Women Trashing Their Razors

The Hairy Legs Club is a Tumblr site for women who don’t want to shave their legs anymore, and the site is just one of several that have started an online trend of women declaring themselves free from the tyranny of the razor, and free from what they say is societally enforced leg-shaving requirement that can be uncomfortable, annoying and expensive.

“This blog is dedicated to females with very hairy legs. Let our legs be the champions!” declares the Hairy Legs Club mission statement.

“We are fully dynamic, capable human beings with SO much more to offer than how each, separate part of our objectified temples looks! Aint NO money hungry c.e.o. gonna tell me how I need to modify my body to be enough,” wrote one contributor to The Hairy Legs Club. “I was enough the moment I was born and I’ll be enough every moment until my final sacred breath.”

“It’s such a shame we live in a world where legs or bodies in general should have to be a source of embarrassment or controversy,” wrote another Hairy Legs Club poster.

The Hairy Legs Club Tumblr site may be the leading online community for women who declare themselves liberated from the compulsory shaving which, they say they now find, is not compulsory at all. But there are other online communities to support this new — and at the same time, old — trend as well.

A Facebook group called WANG — Women Against Non-essential Grooming — has accumulated more than 1,500 members.

Another Tumblr site, Very Hairy Legs, offers inspiration and encouragement to women who feel insecure about their decision to reject society’s hair-removal mandates.

In one touching letter, a woman who describes herself as “overweight” and refusing “to conform to beauty standards set by people nothing to do with me,” said that she she nonetheless worries that because of her appearance and personal grooming choices, “I’ll never find anyone who will fall in love with me.”

“Trust me you will find your love and somebody who will appreciate who you are!” replied the site’s curator. “I recently seen a couple and the female partner was quite hairy, her parner [sic] feels comfortable with that so there are always people would appreciate who you are! And I don’t think people look that much on the toes. Don’t worry darling and god bless you!”

Another poster, “Becca” said that she has stopped shaving her legs and now, “I feel more feminine than ever.”

What do you think? Are sites like the Hairy Legs Club helping remove the social stigma against unshaven legs for women? Now that you’ve learned about it, would you join the Hairy Legs Club?
