I Died Today: Photos Of Duke The Dog’s Last Day On Earth, Both Beautiful And Heartbreaking

Duke Roberts, a black labrador from Houston, Texas, was like a member of the Robert’s family. He was a rescue dog and the Roberts family gave him a home and all their love. However, Duke was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a cancerous bone tumor, in his leg according to KSL. The veterinarian removed his front right leg in hopes of stopping the tumor growth, but sadly it was too late. The tumor spread and Duke began to experience pain as the tumor grew, and the family wanted to help ease Duke as gently from this world as possible.

The Roberts made the heartbreaking and loving decision to let Duke go peacefully and scheduled to have him euthanized on July 7. As sad as the day would be for the family, they knew they wanted to document the beautiful day their family planned to have with Duke before he passed. The Roberts contacted Robyn Arouty Photography and asked if she would document, in photos, Duke’s last day.

Robyn obliged and the photos are an absolutely beautiful, yet heartbreaking, tribute to Duke the dog and his wonderful family. Check out some of the photos below of Duke’s last day.

Duke will be missed by the Robert’s family, but the photographer Robyn points out they will overcome the pain:

“See, I have lost three of my own dogs in the past year and a half. One of them my Maya, my soulmate, she was almost 17 years old. I’m not a very religious person, but God was guiding everything that day and now it’s God and Dukey.Experiencing death with your heart makes you stronger. You can overcome your fears. I’m living proof.”
