‘Batman: Arkham Knight’ Gameplay: What Is ‘Operation Savior’?

Batman: Arkham Knight gameplay has been detailed alongside the reveal of “Operation Savior.” It has been revealed as a military protocol launched by the Arkham Knight as he (or she?) works with Scarecrow to bring Gotham City to its knees.

We don’t know how much the two main villains are working together, but we can assume they are different characters. The “Knight” was a character DC Comics worked with Rocksteady to invent, but as previous games in the series have shown us, main villains are almost never what they appear to be. In Arkham Asylum it was Joker, after having powered himself up with Titan (an unstable knockoff of Bane’s Venom). In Arkham City, you think it’s the Joker again, but in the end you practically never fight him. Batman: Arkham Origins had a similar twist where you discover that Black Mask was just that. He was someone else wearing the mask.

After all of those twists involving villains not being who you think they are, it’s safe to assume at this point that Arkham Knight is really someone we’ve seen before. It was previously deduced that the main Batman: Arkham Knight villain may be Hush, or the mysterious Azrael from Arkham City, or possibly the son of the “ghost” of Amadeus Arkham.

The difference this time, which affects the Batman: Arkham Knight gameplay, is that Commissioner Gordon has officially given up trying to help, since it’s been proven that the GCPD can’t possibly make a positive difference. The Arkham Knight has tanks, and only Batman has something to counter them with. Adding the Batmobile to the Batman: Arkham Knight gameplay definitely adds a possibility of race elements to the game, where you have to balance the use of the vehicle’s regular and tank modes to maximize control and speed.

Apparently “Operation Savior” is the Arkham Knight’s militant plan to put Gotham City in a choke-hold using his own army. This could lead to a lot of instances of the Assassin’s Creed style side quest of saving innocents from soldiers. It sounds like this villain may be out for his own rough justice, but he considers Batman a menace as well and isn’t afraid to kill.

Penguin and Two-Face are back as well, and it’s yet unknown how or why the classic villains would simply give over control to this relative newcomer.

With the Batman: Arkham Knight release date set possibly in January 2015, the promise of Batman: Arkham Knight gameplay under the development of Rocksteady appears to be setting us up for the explosive conclusion they said it would be.

Are you excited to see the conclusion to the best superhero game series of all time?
