Boston Red Sox Trade Rumors: Jake Peavy Could Fetch Prospect From Cardinals

The Boston Red Sox trade rumors will not be in short supply during the MLB all-star festivities this week. The Red Sox find themselves nine games out of first place in the American League East and have shown little hope of turning things around. Although Boston’s playoff hopes are fading fast, that doesn’t mean they have to consider 2014 completely lost.

It appears Boston Red Sox trade rumors are focusing in on sending Jake Peavy packing, possibly to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals are in a fierce four-way battle for the National League Central division and desperately need some pitching. According to Gordon Edes, Peter Gammons, and Jayson Stark of ESPN, it is looking like the Cardinals are honing in on Jake Peavy. Peavy represents a low-risk, possibly high-reward pitcher for the Cardinals.

Early rumors suggested the St. Louis Cardinals were interested in David Price, but he would cost the Cardinals one of their best young pitchers. St. Louis is happy with their young core of arms, but injuries have left them relying on those young arms too much this season. Peavy could provide a veteran bottom of the rotation pitcher who could provide some rest for guys like Carlos Martinez.

After losing on Saturday, Jake Peavy is 1-8 for the Boston Red Sox this season with a 4.59 ERA. Boston Red Sox trade rumors concerning Jake Peavy fade with every losing game he pitches, but a move to the National League could be just what the 33-year-old right-hander needs. Pitching in Boston can be difficult for anyone, but a right hander that relies on changing speeds and placement can really struggle there.

If the Boston Red Sox are willing to pay off a portion of Peavy’s final year of his contract, they could potentially fetch a prospect from the Cardinals. It would most likely not be a top ten prospect, but a lower level player. It is also possible they could gain a relief pitcher to help with their bullpen.

Even if the Red Sox and Cardinals can not work anything out this week, expect both teams to be involved in trades before the deadline on July 31st. Boston needs to begin looking towards the future, and the Cardinals need to develop depth before the playoffs. There should be a flood of Boston Red Sox trade rumors in the next two weeks.
