Raiden Is Revealed For ‘Mortal Kombat X’ At EVO 2014

Out of all the fighting games that were revealed at E3 2014, the one that stood out was easily Mortal Kombat X. Easily surpassing the rehash of Street Fighter IV into its fourth version, which actually won’t beat Street Fighter II, the next game in the series proves to be interesting because it plays a lot like Injustice: Gods Among Us. As a matter of fact, it looks like the company behind the new game is doing so well, that it is suggested they buy Capcom just so they can add life back into the Street Fighter franchise.

At the show, three new characters were revealed along with the returning Scorpion and Sub-Zero. But now a new character has joined the fray and he is a classic: Raiden!

The god of thunder and lighting, protector of earth realm was teased for a release during the EVO 2014 show in which the best fighting gamers competed to show dominance. Though his name wasn’t given out, the fact that the teaser said he was standing watch for eternity kind of gave him away. Anyways, the video clearly shows Raiden and how he will play. Certain moves return like his Electric Shock and iconic Superman slam but they added some cool features including some in-move enhancements. That was probably taken from Injustice: Gods Among Us in which certain special moves could be enhanced if a character had enough in their special bar to do so.

In a follow-up to the reveal, IGN got in touch with Ed Boon, who’s been a part of the Mortal Kombat franchise since its bloody beginnings, and talked about how Raiden would play in the upcoming video game. Apparently, there are three styles for the character: Storm Lord, Displacer, and Thunder God. Going down the line, Thunder God is unique since it is utilizing the herding technique with traps and bombs. A good character that utilizes such methods of attack would be Trish from Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Displacer style is about leveraging with Raiden’s teleport abilities. Finally, Thuder God is all about big damage.

As of now, the game is still being built from the ground up to be a different experience from any other Mortal Kombat game in the franchise. Honestly, this is a big step and worthwhile because it shows that the franchise could change with the times. Let’s hope that more characters are revealed very soon. If this game plays like Injustice: Gods Among Us, then this will be a title to look forward to whenever it releases.
