Jean Segura: 9-Month-Old Son Of Brewers’ Shortstop Has Died

Shortstop Jean Segura is mourning the loss of his 9-month-old son. According to FOX Sports, Segura left the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday to be with his family during this difficult time. The baby lived in the Dominican Republic, which is where Segura is now. The news followed Friday night’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals (which the Brewers lost 7-6). Segura’s mom was in town for the game, so Seggy wasn’t alone when he heard what happened to his young boy.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said:

“Seggy’s mom and uncle are here. We got word at the end of the game through his mom to one of the wives, and then the wife to her husband, and then to Seggy. So, obviously it’s tough on him. He didn’t learn about it until after the game was over and one of the players came over and told him.”

Jean Segura decided to stay in the States and play baseball despite the fact that his son was ill. It’s unknown what 9-month-old Janniel was suffering from or how long he had been ill. Roenicke said that Segura called home the day before and it sounded like his son was okay — that he was doing better even.

As of now, it is unclear if and when Segura will be returning to the Brewers to finish out the season. Elian Herrera from Triple-A Nashville has been brought up to fill Seggy’s spot on the roster. He will be on the team until a Segura decides what to do.

Roenicke explained:

“He’ll just have to make a decision where he’s at and what he feels like. It’s different with everybody. Some guys might feel like, ‘Hey, I need to get back and I need to play,’ and some other guys just can’t do it. That’s why when I tell you I don’t know what’s going to happen with him, I worry about him.”

Jean Segura, 24, is in the hearts and on the minds of his teammates. According to NBC Philadelphia, the guys are having a hard time dealing with the loss — all of them feeling terrible for Seggy, and not even able to comprehend what might have happened to Janniel.

Segura made news back in April when he got hit in the head with a bat. The frightening incident was caught on video. According to The Inquisitr, Segura did not suffer a concussion and he did not spend any time on the DL.
