Russell Crowe And Ryan Gosling Teaming Up For ‘The Nice Guys’

Russell Crowe, 50, and dad-to-be Ryan Gosling, 33, are gearing up to head back into the 1970s for The Nice Guys. The movie is being directed by Iron Man 3 director Shane Black who also co-wrote the film with Anthony Bagarozzi.

According to EW.com, the plot of the movie is as follows:

“In smoggy 1970s Los Angeles, Jackson Healy (muscle-for-hire, recovering alcoholic) and Holland March (private eye, practicing alcoholic) are brought together by the suicide of a fading porn star. Problem is, the dead girl’s aunt is convinced she saw her niece alive and well, after the highly publicized incident. March needs money, takes the case, and within days, it’s blossomed into a far-reaching murder conspiracy, bizarrely rooted in smog and the U.S. auto industry.”

The EW.com article also reports that it is “presumed” that Russell Crowe will play the bruiser, Healy, and Ryan Gosling will play March, the private investigator.

Crowe is coming off a good 2013 where his title role in the disaster epic Noah, based on the popular Bible story, received wide acclaim despite conservatives groups slamming the movie for its inaccuracies, according to the Los Angeles Times. This role might not be as much as a stretch for Crowe as he played a tough guy in both LA Confidential and American Gangster where he starred opposite Denzel Washington.

Unlike Crowe, however, Gosling’s last few movies haven’t done the best, according to the LA Times article. He’s spent a lot of time in the independent movie world with the poorly-received Only God Forgives, and his directional debut Lost River failed to impress the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year in May.

This isn’t Black’s first cop-based movie, either. The LA Times article also pointed out that he wrote the script for the first Lethal Weapon movie which starred Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Also, the first movie he ever directed was Kiss Kiss Bang Bang which starred a pre-Iron Man Robert Downey, Jr., and Val Kilmer. Downey played a criminal who was shadowing Kilmer, a private investigator, because he was accidentally cast in a movie after he randomly ran into an audition while running from police.

Joel Silver, who produced all four Lethal Weapon movies and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, will also be producing The Nice Guys. He’ll be working with Downey again in the near future as he’ll be producing a third Sherlock Holmes movie.

Even with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in place there is no release date yet for The Nice Guys.
