Lois Lerner To Be Arrested? Rep. Steve Stockman Proposes Resolution For Refusal To Testify

Lois Lerner may be arrested soon. Lerner has been called before Congress to testify concerning allegedly lost emails during her tenure at the IRS, when the agency is accused of illegally targeting conservative political groups, but it would appear she felt she had more important things to do. Lois Lerner has refused — or, at the very least — failed to appear before Congress.

According to a report in the Huffington Post, Tea Party favorite son and Republican Congressman Steve Stockman (R-Texas) had this to say:

“Asking the Justice Department to prosecute Lois Lerner for admittedly illegal activity is a joke. How much longer will the House allow itself to be mocked? It is up to this House to uphold the rule of law and hold accountable those who illegally targeted American citizens for simply having different ideas than the President.”

Rep. Stockman made the remarks ahead of filing House Resolution 664, which proposes to find Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress and order her arrest by the House Sergeant-at-Arms.

The Resolution states:

“That the Speaker issue his warrant directed to the Sergeant-at-Arms, or his deputy, commanding him to arrest and take into custody forthwith, wherever to be found, the body of Lois G. Lerner and bring her to the bar of the House without delay to answer to the charge of contempt of its authority, breach of its privileges, and gross and wanton insult to the integrity of its proceedings, and in the meantime keep the body of Lerner in his custody in the common jail of the District of Columbia, subject to the further order of the House.”

In other words, Representative Stockman fully intends that Lois Lerner be arrested and locked up until such time as the House of Representatives is able to ask — and receive answer to — as many questions as they deem appropriate.

Because the House has already found her in contempt of Congress, she could technically already be arrested. HR 664 simply makes clear that Congress intends just that. Stockman doesn’t appear to be playing around with Lerner, either.

Although she could be held in the jail in the basement of the Capitol, the Texas Representative has indicated that he would prefer she were arrested and held in the Washington D.C. jail alongside a wider selection of criminals.

What do you think? Should the House of Representatives send the Sergeant-at-Arms after her? Should Lois Lerner be arrested or is the Republican House playing politics with this?
